Group Volunteering

Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit is always excited to partner with the other organizations and corporations in our community! We greatly appreciate your gift of   service and want to ensure that your time with our organization is as productive and meaningful as possible. Volunteer groups may choose to volunteer their time in person, in our shelter building, or by serving us through an off-site opportunity. Please read through the service options below to decide what is the best fit for your group.

To schedule your group volunteering opportunity, please fill out the form here.  Please indicate the type of service you’re interested in on the form.

In-Shelter Service Opportunities
  •  Must be 18 years or older
  •  Due to space limitations, in-shelter volunteer groups are limited to a max number of 10 people per shift, no exceptions.
  •  Group volunteer shifts are scheduled on Thursdays and Fridays between 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., or 1-4 p.m. We have limited Tuesday and Saturday availability.
  •  Each participant is encouraged to bring one bag of dog or cat food with them as a donation for our Feed Fido food bank. We accept any brand, and we can accept opened bags as long as they are  not expired. Other donations for our shelter animals are welcome as well. Please see our Wish list here.
  •  Must wear long pants, closed-toed shoes, and no dangly jewelry or “nice” clothing.
  •  Options for volunteer activities include cleaning, feeding, and socializing cats, dog walking, building maintenance, animal enrichment projects, social media and office assistance.
  •  Our building is not a safe place for those with an airborne peanut allergy, or for those who are pregnant. We can accommodate most other allergies and disabilities.
  •  You will be asked to leave if you are unable to follow our protocols or found to be interacting inappropriately with our animals or staff members.
Off-site Service Opportunities
  • Host a donation drive.
  • Host an off-site adoption event.
  • Host a group crafting session and make some of our most needed craft items such as dog rope toys and cat fleece blankets.
  • Participate in a group “Doggy Day Out” experience. Volunteers would meet at our location and pick up one of our adoptable dogs, one dog per vehicle. Then you would hit the town for an agreed upon amount of time and help relieve the stress of our shelter dogs via socialization and exercise. (It also helps lead to adoption!) We provide toys, treats, harness, leash, doggy seatbelt, doggy report card, and a list of dog-friendly locations to visit. Your group would be separated during this volunteer opportunity, but you would be volunteering your time together for the same meaningful purpose. You could also split into teams of 2-3 adults per vehicle, per dog. Please check out our website for more info on Doggy Day Out.
